宮城県一宮の塩竃神社と志波彦神社の木札になります。鹽竈神社の御由緒古くから東北鎮護・陸奥国一之宮として、朝廷を始め庶民の崇敬を集めて今日に至りました。
当神社創建の年代は詳らかではありませんが、平安時代初期、嵯峨天皇の御代に編纂された「弘仁式」に「鹽竈神を祭る料壱万束」と記され、厚い祭祀料を授かっていたことが知られます。つまり、奈良時代国府と鎮守府を兼ねた多賀城が当神社の西南5km余の小高い丘(現在の多賀城市市川)に設けられ、その精神的支えとなって信仰されたと考えられます。
武家社会となってからは平泉の藤原氏・鎌倉幕府の留守職であった伊沢氏、そして特に伊達氏の崇敬が厚く、歴代藩主は大神主として務めてまいりました。現在の社殿は伊達家四代綱村公から五代吉村公に亘り9年の歳月をかけ宝永元年(1704)竣工されたものです。江戸時代以降は「式年遷宮の制」が行なわれ、氏子・崇敬者各位の赤誠により平成23年には第十八回の式年遷宮本殿遷座祭が斎行されました。
