ひじょうに迫力のある唐獅子と牡丹の木彫作品です。
日本では獅子のことを、日本に産する猪(いのしし)、鹿(しし)と区別して、中國伝来ということで唐獅子と呼ばれます。
もとは仏陀の一族を守護するインドライオンがモチーフであり、東洋で独自の進化を遂げた伝説上の動物です。
中国に伝わるにつれて美術的、装飾的に図案化されていきました。
古来、獅子は百獣の王、瑞獣と考えられ、美術品の意匠として、巻毛のたてがみを蓄えた勇壮な姿で、絵画や彫刻に表現されてきました。
伝統芸能の獅子舞、神社の狛犬の片割れなど、見かける機会は多く、装飾彫刻の中でも定番中の定番と云えます。
日本の意匠の王道として、よく使われていますが、魔除け、聖域守護の意味が 一番強いでしょう。
今は「狛犬」と一括されているのも元は「獅子・狛犬(角あり)」です。
このお品は元々、鉦(かね)の支持棒(写真参照)として製作されたもので、体の左右に紐通しの孔が設けられています(鉦支持棒としての使用可)。
また置物としても存在感があり、十二分に鑑賞できる作品です。
欅(けやき)の一木(いちぼく)を使用して、見事に彫り上げています。
状態は、欠けやひびもなく良好で未使用です。
