つる性豆科、病害虫に強く、すごく繁茂します。
地べたに這わせて作っていますが、近くの木に登り樹頭を覆ってしまうほどです。
又沢山の豆を房状につけ、収穫もしやすいです。棚仕立てにするときはかなり重いので
棚の強度が必要です。一粒で八升も出来るといわれ昔の飢餓作物らしいです。
空地の草よけとして、また緑肥としても良いです。
豆科特有の窒素を集める植物で、
秋、気温が下がると自然に枯れ、葉が落ちます。蔓葉も土に帰りやすいです。
今年は根元に植えたカボチャが畑を占領してしまいました。
食べては、硬い上に青臭いにおいのする豆で、美味しくはありません。
きな粉にすると良いとあります。
脳細胞を活性化させる成分があり、ボケや強壮に良いとありますが、
定かではありません。
欠点は塩風には弱いだけです。
