商品解説■改造車の見本市!183・189系特急「かいじ」
【実車】
1978年より一部の編成が12両編成で運用していた特急「あずさ」でしたが、1986年に増発と9両編成化を行うことになり先頭車が不足しました。
そこで当時余剰となっていた485/489系の中間付随車に運転台を取り付けて183系に転用する前代未聞の改造が行われ、多くのファンの間で話題となりました。
奇数向き先頭車はクハ183-100番代、偶数向き先頭車はクハ182-100番代として区分されました。
交直流特急型由来の、客室窓がやや高めの車体形状や客用扉下部ステップの張り出しなどはそのまま残されたほか、運転台寄りの客室窓上部に行先表示器が新設されて外見上のチャームポイントとして一目で改造車と識別できる存在となりました。
また、本編成に含まれるモハ188/189-504も485系中間電動車の改造車で1982年の特急「あさま」増発に伴い改造されました。
一部の部品を流用し189系0番代と同様の外観に変更されたため、新製車との区別が付きにくくなっています。
本セットは1988年に誕生した特急「かいじ」を再現したもので、前述の通り改造車が6両中4両の異色の編成です。

●モハユニットはランボード、ブレーキ制御装置、妻面配管の有無の違いを作り分け
●行先、ヘッドマークシールは「かいじ」の他に「あずさ」も収録
