セレナイトの丸玉セレナイトとは、石膏（ジプサム）の一種で中でも白く透明感のある石を指します。
メキシコの“ナイカ鉱山”の巨大結晶の洞窟がとても有名です。
石膏といえば、彫刻やギプスなどいろいろと用途がありますが、セレナイトは古来ガラスの代わりに窓に使用されていたそうです。
ある一定の方向に対しては半透明に透け、違う一定の方向に対してはギラッと光の帯が見えるキャッツアイ効果が見られます。
硬度は低く、爪でも傷つきます。
