銀白色の金属で融点１５６℃。少し加熱すれば容易に融解します。
かつては北海道の豊羽鉱山で産出されていましたが、現在は採掘困難となり閉鎖されています。
インジウムは単独の鉱石というより亜鉛の精錬の副産物として得られることが多い金属です。
液晶パネル用の透明電極など工業的な需要が大きく、また産出量も少ないので相場の変動が大きな希少金属・レアメタルです。
工業的需要や世界情勢の変化に伴い相場の変動が激しく価格は突然高騰することがあります。
特に新興国などの発展に伴う需要増に供給が追い付かなくなりいずれ極めて高価になるかもしれません。
日本ではリサイクルも進んでいますが、主に海外からの輸入に依存しています。
