翡翠は、その豊富な色の原石が、美しい"翡翠"（カワセミ）をイメージさせることから"翡翠玉"と呼ばれるようになり、 その名前が中国から日本へと伝わってきたとされています。
古く中国では、五徳（仁・義・礼・智・信）を高めるとされ、富豪らは正妻に翡翠を贈り、第二夫人にはダイヤを贈っ たとされています。
また翡翠は玉（ギョク）と呼ばれることがあるそうです。
古来より玉（ギョク）には神秘的な霊性があると信じられ、神や皇帝などと結び付けられていました。国王の座る椅子を『玉座』と呼ぶのは、そうした名残です。
