ポリプテルスは「多くの（Poly）ひれ（pterus）」という意味で、
その名前の通り、
恐竜のような刺々しい背ビレを持った魚類。
約3～4億年前のデボン紀に誕生したとされており、
その頃から姿形をほとんど変えず現代まで生き残ってきた事から「古代魚の生き残り」「生きた化石」とも呼ばれ、
男心をくすぐる魅力溢れる観賞魚です。
最大サイズ30cm程度の小型ポリプテルス。
