第2次大戦直後、アメリカ占領下のドイツ。この地の国連救済所にナチの収容所から救い出された一群の子供たちが送られて来た。かれらの中に何を聞かれてもドイツ語で「知らない」と答えるだけの少年がいた。彼はカレル・マリクといい、チェッコの幸福な家庭に育った。だがナチ占領下に家族は離散し、カレルも母のハンナから無理やりに引きはなされた。カレルはその悲しみに心はうつろとなり、ついに喋ることも忘れてしまったのだ。特に休養を要するカレルらは、赤十字の病院車で特別収容所へ送られることになった。だがかれらは病院車に乗れば毒ガスで殺されるというナチ時代の経験で、恐怖にかられ途中脱走を計った。その頃、カレルの母は愛児をたずねてあてどもない旅を7ヶ月もつづけ、探しあぐんだハンナは、とうとう気を失って倒れてしまった。一方、ひとり放浪するカレルは、アメリカ兵ラルフ・スティーヴンスンに拾われた。カレルは次第に正常さをとり戻し、自分にも母がいたことを想い出す。一途におもいつめて母を探しに家をとび出した。
