太平洋戦争の影が日本を覆う中、山陰きっての大地主園田家の一人息子順吉(舟木一夫)は帰省した時、知り合った山番の娘・小雪(和泉雅子)を深く愛するようになった。順吉の父惣兵衛(滝沢修)は、順吉が大学に帰るや地主の権力で小雪の両親正造とサトに因果を含め小雪を他国へ追い出してしまう。しかし却って若い二人を近づけることになり、小雪の後を追った順吉は日本海の荒波と砂丘にはさまれた町で小雪と世帯を持つ。順吉は勘当されるが愛しあう二人は幸福だった。やがて順吉は出征した。小雪は順吉が戦地に行ってから、ヨイトマケ、トロッコ押しと男も及ばないような労働を次から次へとするのだった。小雪にとって唯一の喜びは、順吉の出発する晩、歌って送った“木挽唄”を歌うことだった。やがて終戦がやって来た。激しい労働に小雪はいつしか病に侵され病床の身となっていた…。
