テレビ番組製作のための情報収集を専門に行っている会社「あつめ屋」に勤める伊藤友里(遠藤久美子)。テレビ局からの依頼で、東京の西にある、あきる野市へ赴き、歴史的にも古くから栄え風光明媚だった五日市が、どう変わったのかを取材し始める。最初は渋々の友里だが、市役所の栗原雄介(山崎佳之)に導かれて、時が止まったかのような穏やかな空気が流れる土地柄に触れてゆくうちに、心が洗われていくような感情を覚えるのであった。そして、昔からずっと五日市に暮らしている油屋旅館の女主人・岸トシ子(草村礼子)と出逢い、彼女の生き様に興味を抱くようになり、次第に友里の中でも何かが変わり始める…。
