クナッパーツブッシュは、１９５１・１９５６・１９５７・１９５８年と４つの年度に渡ってバイロイト音楽祭で『ニーベルングの指環』を指揮しており、そのうちの１９５１年の上演に関しては『神々の黄昏』しか録音が残されていないため、全曲を聴けるのは１９５６・１９５７・１９５８年の３つの年度のものということになり、それらはすでにＣＤ化されてもいます。
クナッパーツブッシュの３つの『リング』については、これまでにもさまざまな議論が展開されてきました。
ちなみに１９５６年は、クナはカイルベルトと二人で『指環』チクルスを担当したほか、クナ単独で『パルジファル』を指揮した年度で、１９５７年は、『指環』はクナ単独でしたが、『パルジファル』がクリュイタンスと二人、１９５８年は『指環』『パルジファル』共にクナッパーツブッシュ単独の指揮という年度でした。
つまり１９５８年のクナは久々に伸び伸びとバイロイトで振舞えたということになるのかもしれません。肝心のキャスティングは、１９５７年盤が最も良いという意見が多いようですが、１９５８年盤も１９５６年盤も豪華であることに変わりはなく、このあたりは歌手の好みの問題になりそうです。
クナッパーツブッシュ・ファンのみならず、往年のオペラ演奏やワーグナーの音楽に魅力を感じる方すべてにオススメしたい見事な『指環』。
