第74回ヴェネチア国際映画祭クラシック部門出品作品茂吉(佐分利信)と妙子(木暮實千代)は生まれや気質の違いゆえに心の通わないままの中年夫婦。
微妙な感情の食い違いによって長年蓄積していたものが、妙子の長兄の娘・節子(津島惠子)の見合い問題を機に爆発する。
そんななか、茂吉が急に海外出張に行くことに・・・。
戦時中に出征前夜の物語として書かれたものの検閲当局に却下されたシナリオを、海外出張という設定に変えて映画化された。
夫婦のすれ違いと和解が、多彩な人物と、乗り物、娯楽、食べ物といった戦後生活を彩る諸相のなかで描かれる。
