紫檀属の広葉樹。学名：pterocarpus tinctorius、アフリカ大陸のコンゴ、ザンビア共和国等地に生息。
心材はオレンジ色から血の様な鮮やかな赤色を呈し血檀と呼ばれる。
熟成後は紫褐色に変化する。材面には絹のような光沢がある。
木質は重硬で気乾比重は高い。家具や工芸品などに利用される高級材。

柔らかな布で拭き取ってください。また汚れや乾燥防止にワックス塗布も効果的です。ご使用後は直射日光、湿気や乾燥を避け保管ください。特に冬場等の乾燥により材が縮んだ場合、箱の中にペン軸と、お水を入れたコップを置き約2－3日湿気を含ませることで、自然に戻るはずです。
