[一点もの]ローマングラスのペンダントの説明
■ローマ時代からの贈り物
ローマンガラスとは、はるか昔、ローマ帝政開始の紀元前27年から、ローマ帝国の東西分裂（紀元後後395年）までの約5世紀間に、ローマ帝国内で製造・流通したガラス製品です。こちらのペンダントトップになっているローマンガラスは、東西文化の交流地点であった中央アジアと南アジアの交差点で出土したものです。遙かローマから、駱駝の隊商に載せられて、長旅の後に中央アジアと南アジアの交差点にたどり着きました。ローマから運ばれたガラスは古代の人たちに使用されたあと、何らかの理由で土の下に眠ったのだと思われます。
■土の中で眠ることで出来る光沢
1000年、2000年もの間、土の中で眠り続けてきたガラスは、徐々に化学変化を起こし、その表面にキラキラとした光沢をまとうようになります。これは銀化と呼ばれる現象で、ガラス成分が土に含まれる銅や、鉄、マグネシウムなどの成分と長い時間の間に化学変化を起こします。土の中に埋蔵されている時間が長くなるにつれて、銀化した層が多くなり、色も多層に、光の反射も複雑になり、綺麗になっていきます。
カラフルで星空の様な輝きを持つローマンガラスは、ローマ時代の人が使用したガラス製品が、遺物として土の下に埋まり、化学変化を起こして出来上がったものです。
人の手では作ることができない、ただ、悠久の時だけが作ることが出来る貴重なガラスを、一つ一つ、一品物のペンダントにしました。
