漫画版アンドロメダ編を、コンパクトな形で再構成した全編新作のアニメ映画作品。1979年公開。製作した東映動画は、設立以来、親会社の東映の下で劇場アニメ映画の制作をしていたが、本作が東映動画にとっての初の自社製作の劇場映画となる。
ストーリー構成は、制作当時までに原作で描かれてきた山場というべきエピソードを中心に再構成。原作・テレビでは旅立ち前の出来事であった機械伯爵との決戦が中盤に移動しているなど、時系列の入れ替えが大胆に行われている。999での旅を通じて描かれる鉄郎の成長とともに、『ハーロック』で登場するアルカディア号が、どういう経緯でトチローの意思を持つようになったのか、未完となっていた漫画『クイーン・エメラルダス』での、トチローを探す彼女の旅の結末なども本作では描かれている。
