生まれつき右足が不具であったフィリップは長年志した画家の道を断念し、ロンドンの医学校に通っていた。フィリップは学校近くの喫茶店のウェイトレス、ミルドレッドを異性として意識し夢中になっていく。だが、利己主義であざとい性格のミルドレッドは足の不自由なフィリップを疎んでいた。しかし、彼が遊ぶ金には不自由がない男だと判断すると急に気のある素振りを交えフィリップを虜にしてしまう。そのためにフィリップは試験に落第してしまった。彼女は浮気者で男出入りが絶えず、他の相手と一緒になるからと彼の求婚を退けた。失望したフィリップは女流小説家のノラと親密になり、再び幸福な安穏な勉学生活が出来るようになった。ところが妊娠したミルドレッドがフィリップの前に再び現れる。やがて、生まれた赤ん坊はフィリップが里子にやるまでの面倒を見た。ノラは失望してフィリップとは別れてしまいミルドレッドはフィリップの同級生グリフィスの情婦となって彼に再び苦杯を嘗めさせたのだった・・・。
