聖心の伽藍鳥 木彫像, オランダ, 17世紀-18世紀
オランダ、17世紀-18世紀。東インド会社 ( Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, 通称 VOC ) の貨物船コンテナから出土した伽藍鳥 ( Pelican / ペリカン ) の木彫像。 プリミティブな造形が大変に魅力的です。枯れた木の質感と静謐な雰囲気のある佇まい、そこに生まれる陰影には深い味わいがあります。 伽藍鳥 ( Pelican / ペリカン ) について： ペリカンは「聖心」の初期シンボルです。また「自己犠牲、献身、母性、慈愛」を表すこともあります。 その由来は「母親のペリカンは、心臓の血が雛鳥の口に流れ込むように自身の胸に穴を空け、その流れた血によって雛鳥を育てた」という自己犠牲によって子を育てたという古い伝承です（この伝承は、ペリカンがくちばしを胸の羽毛に入れて休む習性からきたと思われます）。 この古い伝承を聖アウグスティヌス ( 4世紀-5世紀 ) が、事実として受け入れてから、聖職者を中心に神聖な紋章・シンボルとして扱われるようになったのです。
