ディアンジェロ、マックスウェルと並ぶニュー・クラシック・ソウルの雄にした96年初作『トゥルー・トゥ・マイセルフ』、豪華制作陣の話題に事欠かない、だがジンクス破れなかった2作目。そして届いた6年ぶり3作目。実際のところは不明だが、相当な辛苦の時間を乗り越えた(初作前にもあったから再び)……と窺える歌詞が表題曲他何曲もあり、それを証明するように2作目では生彩を欠いたソウルフルな歌声がずっと優しく逞しく響く。デイヴィッド・フォスター、ウォルター・アファナシエフ他数人を迎え、彼自身も加わっての制作。基本は生演奏、小編成録音も他方にあるオーケストラを得た録音も編曲はシンプル~オーソドックス(多少大掛かりなオーケストレーションもその姿を堂々と見せる味方にしてる)、そうした中から彼らしさ、彼ならではの黒さが自然に滲みだし自由にあふれだしている。聴き手の心を掴む強さも初作に勝る。こんな歌が聴きたかった、帰って来てくれてありがとう! の気持ちでいっぱいだ。プライベートな問題が重なったこともあって、出世作『ア・デイ・イン・ザ・ライフ』(99年)から6年ぶりとなる。“また自分らしくなろう”と歌う、才気あふれるアコースティックの(1)から始まるが、デヴィッド・フォスターらの参加でポップなアプローチが目立つ。
