紀元前515年、中国の春秋末期。中華の大地ではひしめく諸侯による戦乱が絶えなかった。中でも呉・楚・越3国の君主は、計り知れぬ悪辣さを胸に抱え、表だってあるいは陰で争いを続けていた。血気盛んで、兵法十三篇を胸に秘めていた斉の孫武(チャン・フォンイー)は、裏切り者から迫害を受けたため、家族を連れて呉の国をめざして逃亡する。孫武はその道中、呉の王叔を狙う刺客に遭遇するが無事王叔を救出する。その刺客は意外にも美しい女であった。呉の国でもまた、政変に向けての準備が静かに進んでいた。王子・闔閭(ユウ・ヨン)は長年にわたり画策していた兄の殺害を実行し、ついに王の座に就く。野心あふれる呉王闔閭は、楚を攻めて自らの領土を拡大すると誓うが、それには大戦を起こすことが必須だった。孫武は、呉に移り住んで以来、市井に身を潜めていたが、優れた者を見抜く目を持った呉国大夫の伍子胥により大将軍に推挙される。孫武は呉王闔閭の命令を受け、宮仕えの女による練兵を行った際、指示に従わぬ王妃を殺害してしまうが、呉王は孫武を大将軍に任命し、呉の大軍を率いるよう命じる。さらに、公主のイ羅(ジン・ティエン)を若夫人として孫武にめとらせるのだがこの婚姻により、孫武は一生人知れぬ苦しみを抱えることになる…。
