緊迫感に溢れた壮大なスケールの演奏。蓄積されたエネルギーが一気に爆発した終楽章での白熱の高揚感が秀逸。
テ・カナワ、ホーンという一流歌手が共演。同曲では、2000年1月、
サイトウ・キネン・オーケストラを指揮した東京ライヴの録音も有名。
小澤征爾は、1973年から2002年までの約30年間に亘り、アメリカの名門オケ、ボストン交響楽団の音楽監督を務めましたが、
両者が旧“Philips”レーベルに行った金字塔的録音の「マーラー：交響曲全集」の一枚。
