本書は人間を発達の視点からとらえ、生命の誕生から小児期・青年期・成人期を経て死に至るまでの量的・質的変化を記述したものである。
従来、人間発達とは子どもが大人になるまでのことであると一般に信じられてきた。
しかし、１９７０年代頃から大人時代の発達にも急速に関心が高まり、実証的成果が報告されるようになったので、これらの成果をふまえて生涯発達を展望できる書を意図した。
内容の構成は、総論と各論の７章（１章出生前発達と出生、２章乳児・幼児前期、３章幼児後期、４章学童期、５章青年期、６章成人期、７章死と死の受容）よりなり、人間の生涯にわたる発達を図表をできるだけ多く取り入れて記述した。
また、最近の研究の成果を紹介し、人間の発達が個体と環境との相互作用によって力動的に構成され、再構成されていく様相に注目しながら、人間発達の共通性と特異性を理解できるように配慮した。
