【詳細】フランキンセンスはミルラとともに、古代の王族や貴族の社会において黄金に値するものとして取引されていた歴史があり、現代においても大変珍重される天然香料の一つです。
フランキンセンスという名称は、中世のフランス語「真実の香り」という意味に由来しています。
イエス・キリスト誕生のときに東方の三博士がミルラや黄金とともに捧げたという言い伝えもあり、エジプトでは朝に焚く香として寺院での瞑想や宗教儀式にも用いられてきました。
ボスウェリア属の樹木は、イエメン・オマーンなどや、エジプト・エチオピア・ケニア・ソマリアなどのほか、インド・マレーシア・中国などに分布しています。
フランキンセンス乳香の樹脂は、種や産地により色や芳香が異なります。
