幕末の薩摩藩家老。「国父」島津久光の絶大な信頼のもと、海軍増強など強藩づくりを推進し、中央政局においては、大政奉還から王政復古を導き出した演出者であった。維新後も外交の矢面に立ったが、その余りに早い死は歴史的評価を著しく低くした。幕末維新史を大胆に見直しながら、東奔西走し大変革を成し遂げた奮闘の生涯を描く初の本格評伝。
※ うす汚れやコスレ、角やふちの軽い潰れなど使用感があります。ページ内、根本が開きかけの部分が一箇所あるのと、裁断面の地（立てた場合の底面）側から打ちつけたような小キズがあり、その部分がページ内からみると10〜15枚あとになっているのと、そのうち二枚は小さく破れています。それ以外は至って良好、衛生面でも問題なく、書き込みもありません。
