政治の腐敗、モラルの低下、貧困と差別、頻発する犯罪。こんなに“とんでもない”国がなぜこんなに元気なのか？ 不滅の国に生きる人々の姿を、親愛と皮肉を交えて綴る。
社会学的な小難しい内容だと思って買うと全然違うので注意です。内容は筆者が、20年間にわたりイタリアに住んできた経験や、そこで感じたことのルポタージュのようなものです。本書の題名の答えは「イタリアは陽気な国民性だから」と自分は読みとれました。笑
ショートストーリー13章（フィクション）から成り、面白おかしくイタリアの特徴を述べています。簡単に、楽しく読めるのでイタリアに興味がある人にはお勧めです。（しかし、本書を読むとイタリアに行きたい！とは思わなくなるんじゃないかなぁ…。苦笑）
私は去年初めてイタリアに行きましたが、驚いたことの一つに労働者の意識（というと大袈裟？）でした。どのお店に入ってもお客さんには適当にあしらうというか日本人ほど“真面目に”働くようには見えません。土日は休んでいるお店も多いし。にもかかわらず（「だから」か？）、労働者の権利は強く、特に労働時間に関して法律で強く守られています。
そんな経験と照らし合わせても、頷ける部分の多い一冊でした。
