カラヤン生誕１００年記念に合せて、1977年ニューイヤー・イヴの『第九』ライヴ映像。
じつに４度にも及ぶ全集レコーディングをおこなっているベートーヴェンの交響曲は、カラヤンにとってレパートリーの重要な柱のひとつでしたが、さすがはメディアの寵児カラヤン。映像でも２度の交響曲全集を収録しており、『第九』は、第１回全集では1968年１、２月、第２回全集では1986年９月に収録されています。
ベルリン・フィルとの２度目、70年代のスタジオ全集録音と時期が重なるこのジルヴェスターの第九ライヴは、ソリストもテノールのコロをのぞいてほぼ同じ（全集ではシュライヤー）。磨き抜かれた弦の美音などカラヤン色が徹底され、もっとも完成された内容として知られるものです。
