1949年、高知県生まれ。大阪市立大学出身。黒部峡谷の幻の剱沢大滝を見て登山に熱中。剱沢大滝初溯行。ゲントIIとランタンリルンに初登頂。剱沢積雪期溯行。先鋭的な登山法で、8000m峰のカンチェンジュンガ、ナンガ・パルバットなどに登山し、世界的な登山家として注目を浴びる。滑落事故で、膝に致命的な障害を受けたが、怪我を克服して、冬の剱岳・黒部、ヒマラヤと鮮烈な登山を続け、日本の登山界を牽引してきた。
著者略歴
和田城志
1949年10月21日、高知県香南市夜須町に生まれる。高知県立追手前高校を経て、1969年、大阪市立大学工学部応用物理学科に入学する。登山は高校時代より始める。本格的な登山は大学山岳部に入ってからである。1972年、大学を中退し、大学の仲間たちとダイコー産業株式会社を設立入社する。冬の剱岳、雪の黒部川を中心に、冬山登山を続ける。1987年、同社退職、北アルプス立山で遭難、二年間無職。登山を一時止める。その後、家具会社に就職、登山を再開する。1999年、体力の限界を感じ、登山の一線をしりぞく。2007年、母の介護のため退職し、無職になる
