とある街にある昔ながらの佇まい『アパートの清水』。/そこでは今日も、売れない漫画家・狩野進(横山裕)が締め切りを迎えて早々に彼女にフラれるところを同じ階の秋友美月(山本舞香)に冷めた目で目撃され、その騒がしさの中でも、訳あって1人暮らし中の少年・さとうコタロー(川原瑛都)は静かに朝の準備を進めていた。この春からめでたく小学校に入学したコタロー。ランドセルを背負い、1人で小学校に通っていく姿を、狩野や美月、そして1階の田丸 勇(生瀬勝久)は頼もしくも少し寂しい気持ちで見送るのだった。/そんなある日、コタローは突然「しょくぎょうくんれん」を始めると言い出す。美月が働く喫茶店や大家の清水のばーさん(イッセー尾形)、そして親友の岩永 佑(松島聡)のもとを訪ねては、さまざまなことを学ぼうとするコタロー。意図がわからず困惑する狩野だったが、その理由が「いつ“優しき者からの寄付”が終わってしまうかわからないので自分の力で生き抜くために手に職をつけたい」というものだと知り、「俺の仕事も手伝ってみるか？」と声をかける。/さっそく締め切り直前の狩野の作業を手伝い始めたコタローだったが、ちょっとしたミスから原稿が台無しになってしまう出来事が…！焦ったコタローは、そのまま何も言わず原稿とともに姿を消してしまい…？
