新書です。 きれなほうです。ドラゴン桜で私が考案した「トランプ計算」が紹介され、全国に広まっています。少しでも低学力化の歯止めになればよいのですが。
さて、本書を書き終えて今更ながらに感じたことは、学校や教育を取り巻く言論におけるリアリズムの欠如でした。
子ども達の学力が下がりつづけていた１９９０年代には「偏差値教育が子どもを傷つけている」という主張が真顔でされていました。
不登校児の家庭内暴力で親が手を焼いているときに「管理主義的な学校に通える子ども達のほうがどうかしている」という言論が勢いを得た時期もありました。
読んだこともない歴史教科書を「戦争を賛美する教科書だ」と思い込み、採択反対運動ビラを配っている教員は今でも大勢います。
思えば日本人がリアリズムを失ったのは日中戦争から対米戦争そして敗戦へと向う時でした。
戦略なき戦争と日本社会全体を覆った精神主義。本書を書くにあたって、戦時の学校や社会を改めて調査し、本当に暗澹たる思いがしました（だからと言って、先の戦争が無意味だった訳でも、日本だけが悪かった訳でもありませんが）。
戦後教育を肯定する人達は、「戦後教育は戦前・戦中教育の反省から生まれた」と言います。
しかし私には、戦後教育は日本人が先の戦争中に失ったリアリズムさえ、取り戻そうとしていない、と思えてなりません。
本書が、教育を巡る議論をリアルなものにし、多くの日本人を戦中・戦後教育の呪縛から解き放つ一助になれば望外の幸せです。
