『ブラック・ジャック』の作者手塚治虫さんは1980年から晩年まで東久留米市で過ごされました。
主人公「ブラック・ジャック」は天才的な腕を持つ
無免許外科医で、死の危機にさらされた重症
患者でも、その手腕を振るい奇跡的に助けます
が、その代価として莫大な代金を請求するため、
医学界ではその存在すらも否定されています。
その一方で、貧しい患者や心のきれいな患者
には無償で治療を行うなど、作中では優しい
人柄をのぞかせることもあります。シリアスで
生々しい描写や、良きパートナーである「ピノコ」と
コミカルに掛け合いながら、「生命の尊厳」や
「いのちの不思議」を、手塚先生の知識や経験、
そして信念をもとに伝える作品です。
