－R. シュトラウスを愛していたグールドが残した最晩年の録音。グールドの最後の録音はトロント響を指揮したワーグナーのジークフリート牧歌ですが、[1]はその前におこなわれた最後のピアノ演奏です (ディジタル録音)。－LPと同時だった国内初出盤で、遺作としての発表となりました。
－2曲はシュトラウス17歳頃の若書き。グールドのこの演奏はその初録音だったでしょう。[1]はソナタ形式の速い両端楽章、緩徐楽章の第2楽章、スケルツォの第3楽章という伝統的なスタイル。この曲が面白いのは 第1楽章がベートーヴェンのいわゆる「運命の動機」でできており、しかも本家以上にこの動機で展開させていること。コーダも本家のそれをまねています。その後の楽章はベートーヴェンを離れます。メンデルスゾーンからの影響を指摘されており、確かにそうした爽快なロマンティシズムが感じられますが、短調で3拍子、悲劇性を持つ終楽章の展開部は大変な力作。グールドもそれを示すかのような力演を聞かせてくれます。[2]もメンデルスゾーンを思わせる爽やかな叙情。
