In 1947, at the age of 28, Britain's top jazz pianist emigrated to the US. Within two years his first American recording, "September In The Rain", was heading for sales of 900,000 copies. Success on this scale was almost inconceivable for a jazz instrumental at the time, and Shearing had achieved it by devising a new sound. His quintet consisted of piano, guitar, vibraphone, bass and drums, with the melody instruments locked tightly together to produce a bright, glowing effect. The "Shearing sound" has been endlessly copied since, but never with quite the same sparkle as the original. The imitations also lack Shearing's own stunningly fluent and inventive improvised solos. This collection features all the quintet's biggest hits, including "I'll Remember April", the contrapuntal "Pick Yourself Up" and Shearing's most famous composition, "Lullaby Of Birdland". --Dave Gelly
