舞台は1940(昭和15)年の東京。父と母、娘の初子と照美の野上家は、お互いを「父べえ」「母べえ」「初べえ」「照べえ」と愛称で呼び合う仲睦まじい家族だ。しかし、小さな家庭の穏やかな日常は、文学者である父・滋が治安維持法で検挙された朝から一変する。戦争に反対することが、国を批判するとして罪になる時代だった…。不安を募らせる母と娘たちのもとに、温かい思いやりを持った人々が次々に訪れる。父の教え子で出版社に勤める山崎は、父との面会申請のために奔走し、やがて一家から「山ちゃん」と呼ばれる大切な存在になる。父の妹で美しく快活な久子は、思春期を迎えた初子とおてんばな照美の良きお姉さん役で、いつしか山ちゃんにほのかな想いを寄せるようになる。そして、変わり者の仙吉叔父さんは、あけっぴろげで遠慮のない性格のため、いくつもの騒動を巻き起こすのだった。離ればなれになった家族をつなぐのは手紙だった。まるで日記を書くかのように毎日の出来事を父に綴る初子と照美。そんな娘たちの成長を見守ることが母べえの心の支えだった。そんなある日、野上家に思いがけない便りが届く…。父べえが無事帰って来てほしいという希望。娘たちがすくすくと育ってほしいという希望。正しいことを正しいと言える平和な時代が来てほしいという希望。そして母べえの存在そのものが絶望の中を生き抜くための真の「希望」。混迷する現代に生きる私たちへのメッセージ。受難の中で希望を抱きしめる。
