昭和50年10月14日の鉄道記念日。滝ノ上市蔵は30年国鉄に努めてきた功績章を受けとるために、妻・里子とともに札幌へ向かった。保線一筋に生きてきた半生を誇らしく思う反面、表彰されることに抵抗を感じる市蔵。一家の生活はなかなか楽にならない上、“マル生”という悪名高い合理化運動が多くの仲間を見捨てていき、市蔵の職場にも広がってきていた。市蔵の受賞を祝うささやかな宴がひらかれたところへ娘・由紀が恋人を連れてくる。市蔵の鬱憤が突然爆発、二人の結婚に大反対し祝いの席は荒れに荒れるが…。
