ボスニア・ヘルツェゴヴィナ問題など、旧ユーゴスラヴィアの混乱の戦後50年の歴史を綴る映像絵巻。監督は「パパは出張中！」「ジプシーのとき」「アリゾナ・ドリーム」のエミール・クストリッツァ。エグゼクティヴ・プロデューサーはピエール・スペングラー。旧ユーゴ出身の劇作家デュシャン・コバチェヴィチの戯曲を基に、彼とクストリッツァが脚本を執筆。撮影のヴィルコ・フィラチ、音楽のゴラン・ブレゴヴィチ、「デリカテッセン」を手がけた美術のミリェン・クチャコヴィチ“クレカ”は、「ジプシーのとき」以来の常連スタッフ。中でも音楽は、民族音楽をアレンジしたサウンドが印象的で、また第二次大戦中のドイツで圧倒的な人気を集め、連合軍側でもヒットした『リリー・マルレーン』が挿入曲として使われて実に皮肉な効果を出している。出演は、ピーター・ブルックの劇団などで活躍する国際的な名優で、「マハーバーラタ」映画版（NHK教育テレビで放映、LD発売）にも出演した「パパは出張中！」のミキ・マノイロヴィチをはじめ、旧ユーゴ映画・演劇を代表する俳優たち。95年カンヌ国際映画祭で賛否両論を集め、やはり旧ユーゴ問題を背景にしたテオ・アンゲロプロスの「ユリシーズの瞳」を抑えてグランプリ（パルム・ドール）を受賞。96年度キネマ旬報外国映画ベストテン第3位。

「アンダーグラウンド」のエミール・クストリッツァ監督のデビュー作で、1981年ヴェネチア国際映画祭新人賞受賞作。サラエヴォに住む少年ディーノの成長を瑞々しい感性で描いた青春ストーリー。2013年ヴェネチア国際映画祭で上映後、日本劇場初公開。出演は、「アンダーグラウンド」のスラヴコ・シュティマッツ、「パパは、出張中！」のスロボダン・アリグルディチ、「灼熱」のミラ・バニャツ、「ウェディング・ベルを鳴らせ！」のリリャナ・ブラゴイェヴィチ。
