1945年、太平洋戦争末期。アメリカ軍はマクベイ艦長率いる重巡洋艦インディアナポリス号に、ある極秘任務を与える。それは長きに渡る大戦に終止符を打つ最終兵器、原子爆弾の輸送であった。危険極まりない戦地へと旅立ったマクベイと兵士たちは、日本軍との激しい戦闘をかい潜りながらなんとか目的地テニアン島にたどり着く。任務を終え安堵に包まれながら次の目的地へ出発するマクベイ一行。しかしその時、艦内に爆音が鳴り響く。橋本中佐率いる日本軍の潜水艦が発射した魚雷が艦に直撃したのだ。激しい戦闘の末、沈没してしまうインディアナポリス。命からがら脱出したものの、太平洋を漂流するはめになったマクベイと兵士たちに、今度は飢えと喉の渇き、そして獰猛な鮫たちが襲い掛かる。極限状態に陥り次々と命を落としていく兵士たちと、彼らを一人でも多く生きて家族の元へ帰そうと奮闘するマクベイ。しかしこれは、マクベイに襲い掛かる過酷な運命の始まりにすぎなかった……
