刻印がマンモスに見えることから恐竜金貨とも呼ばれ、古来よりコレクターに珍重されています。もしかすると紀元前５世紀ごろのヨーロッパの深山幽谷には恐竜が生存し、古代アテネ人によって目撃されていたのかもしれません。しかし常識的に考えれば、当時の人々に恐竜の認識などはなく、おそらくは恐竜以外の生物を描いたにもかかわらず余りにも稚拙な表現力のために結果として現代人の目に恐竜に見えてしまうのかもしれません。前者の方が夢のある発想ですね。
