パーヴォ・ヤルヴィとフランクフルト放送響とのブルックナー・チクルス第8弾は、初期の創作活動を締めくくる傑作・第3番。作曲当初は敬愛するワーグナーに捧げられたため、「ワルキューレ」や「トリスタン」からの引用も含まれる長大な作品でしたが、改訂を繰り返したため、第2番と並び複雑な稿態が残されています。ヤルヴィは、現在最も一般的に演奏される、ブルックナーが交響曲第8番第1稿を完成させた後に着手した1889年の第3稿を用いています。経験を積んだ老齢の指揮者のみが名演を成し遂げるというイメージがあるブルックナーの交響曲ですが、ヤルヴィは、速めのテンポで音楽を息づかせ、細部を緻密に仕上げつつ、ブルックナーの特徴である巨大なブロック構造を明晰に提示しています。ヤルヴィはこの交響曲をフランクフルトでのチクルスの最初に演奏・録音していましたが、演奏に満足せず、再度取り上げた際にライヴ録音されたものです。 (C)RS
