数年前に、妻の久子(倍賞美津子)や家族を置いて家を出ていった浜中(長塚京三)が東京の片隅にある上宿商店街にふらりと舞い戻った。妻はなじることもなく、優しく迎え入れた。何事もなかったように父が経営する電気屋で働き始める浜中。久子にひそかに思いを寄せていた青年、朝倉(上川隆也)はそんな彼が許せず、過去を調べ始めた。そして、商店街の喫茶店のオーナー・たみ(桃井かおり)と浜中が昔、付き合っていたこと、二人は当然結婚すると思われていたが、突然、たみが大沢という男と結婚したこと、そして、大沢が病死した頃に浜中が町を出ていったらしいことを知る。 慕情を募らせる朝倉、浜中の出現に心揺さぶられるたみ、何も言わず彼を迎え入れる久子、そして、無口で多くを語ろうとはしない浜中。四者四様の切ない想いが商店街の人々の人間模様と穏やかな心を揺り動かしていく・・・。
