直訳された題名はアイルランド海に浮かぶマン島の住民を意味する。これは、サー・ホール・ケインの有名な小説を映画化した文芸作品で、ヒッチコックの監督第9作にあたり、最後のサイレント作品でもある。サスペンス要素は薄いが、幼なじみ三人が、不運から厳しい三角関係に陥って悲劇的結末に追い詰められてゆく物語が、水車小屋のひき臼や、海の海面とインク壺の二重像などを象徴的にイメージとして巧みに使いつつ、一貫した心理的緊張を伴って描かれ、メロドラマとしてはなかなかの見ごたえある佳作。 幼馴染みの漁師、ピート(カール・ブリッソン)と弁護士、フィリップ(マルコム・キーン)が故郷の島に戻ってくる。ピートはフィリップを含めて幼馴染み三人である旅籠の娘、ケイト(アニー・オンドラ)に求婚するが、彼女の父親はピートが貧乏なので結婚を許さない。ピートは彼女に「必ず戻ってくる」と約束して出稼ぎに行くが、やがて彼が死んだという知らせが島にもたらされる。フィリップはケイトを慰めるが、実は彼もケイトを愛していることが分かり、ケイトのほうも愛の告白をする。そこへ死んだ筈のピートが帰ってくる。
