時は明朝、弘治帝の時代。都から遠く離れた地方都市、鶏鳴駅に類まれなる博学で知られる若者、楊凌がいた。しかし彼は将来を誓い合った許嫁の韓幼娘との結婚式の日に突然病に倒れてしまう。気づくと全ての記憶を失って棺桶の中に横たわっていた。外では幼娘が遺産を奪いにきた楊凌の親族から責め立てられている。とっさに飛び出た楊凌はその場を収めると、記憶は失いつつも、純真な幼娘を憐れみ、彼女を生涯守り抜こうと決心する。医者に診てもらった楊凌は自分が毒を盛られており残された時間は限られていることを知る。その後、街で起こったやっかいな裁判沙汰を見事に解決した彼は県長官の目に留まり参謀へと引き立てられる。/その頃、明の征服を企てるタタール軍が5万の兵を率いてまずは辺境の鶏鳴駅へと侵攻する。その制圧は赤子の手をひねるより簡単と思われたが、軍の指揮を一任された楊凌は奇策を弄し籠城戦に持ち込む。その間に弘治帝に援軍を依頼、見事にタタールの攻撃を持ちこたえた。激しい戦闘のさなか、楊凌は弘治帝の皇子、朱厚照と親交を結ぶ。そして後に皇子の影の補佐役として北京に上り、宮廷内の陰謀や策略から皇子を守りつつ、彼を皇帝の座につけるべく、紫禁城の熾烈な権力闘争に身を挺してゆく……。
