小林陽一&JJMの音楽的成果を示す新作の誕生。ドラマー小林陽一のジャパニーズ・ジャズメッセンジャーズ(JJM)の最新作「Sounds Good」が完成した。クインテットを結成以来40年有余数あるアルバムを発表しながら不断の進展を遂げ現在のグループの演奏水準はその最高峰に至ったと言っても過言では
ない。毎年小林が主催するバップコンサートの2018年版を去る3月11日、村田浩Bop Bandとの共演の形で開催し、その直後スタジオ録音を完遂した。今
回はレギュラーメンバーの4人(谷殿tp、原川as、田窪p、航太朗b)に加え、曲により夫々小林の嘱目するゲスト4人(マイク・ザチャーナックtp、岡野大
夢as、リン・ヘイテツp、池尻洋史b)を参加させたので、サウンドが更に豊かになった。小林陽一が絶えず主張するハード・バップのアコースティックな
フォー・ビート、スイング・リズムは本作アルバム9曲の全てに一貫して保持されている。小林の信奉するアート・ブレイキー&ジャズメッセンジャーズの
数多のヒット曲を中心に(アートブレイキー生誕100年)シダー・ウオルトンやデクスター・ゴードンの作品を含め、1990年代のトニー・ウイリアムスの
作「City Of Lights」を採り上げた点が、今回の新しいチャレンジと言えよう。このモーダルな現代曲のアレンジには相当苦労したと言うが、小林の忌避
するコンテンポラリーな"Even Eighth"の8拍子リズムではないFour Beatに一貫してGrooveさせた点は大きな成果であったと思う。アメリカでもNe
w Century Quintetの如く若手によるハード・バップの現代版コンボが出現しているが、小林グループこそ早くからそれを実践してきたパイオニアであり
、本作は一つの金字塔である。参考に各曲のアメリカジャズメンによる原演奏アルバムを記載したので比較対聴して、小林メンバーの意欲的成果(Sound
s Good)を楽しく評価して頂きたい。
