ジャズ・サンバのヒット以降、大手レコード会社で若手と新曲を次々に投入し売れ線狙いのジャズ・ボやってきたGetz。Chick Coreaが参加した諸作などそれなりの成果もあったが、当人曰く「自分を裏切
っている」感情に苛まれてきたという。ニューヨークからサンフランシスコへの移住を機にに当地のジャズ専
門のレコード会社に移籍。そこで同世代の仲間との肩肘張らないライブの模様を吹き込んアルバムタイト
"The Dolphin"はルイス・エサ作のジャズ・ボッサ。派手な所は何もなく渋いを通り越して枯淡の境地
すら感じられるものだが、大手時代はこの場所にたどり着くためにあったんじゃないか、と思えてしまう
ほどの名演。Getzの気品と清涼感溢れる音色がイルカのイメージと完全に合致。これほど奏者の音色
と曲調がかみ合った曲はそうそうない。Lou Levyのピアノも突き抜けるような清涼感の醸成に一役買っている。
他の5曲もお馴染みスタンダードで他の曲も奇を衒うことない滋味溢れる演奏。イルカと戯れるジャケ写か
は長年圧し掛かってきた肩の荷を降ろしたようなリラックスした様子が伝わってくる。
