本書は『日本経済新聞』の教養特集(別刷・毎週火曜日)に、「戦後思潮―主題と主役」と題して昭和52年9月6日から154回、3年4ヶ月の間連載した文章である。“今鏡”というペンネームで執筆したもの。
ここに登場した多くの知識人は、総合雑誌の編集者として、筆者が直接、間接、なにがしかの実感をもってその風貌に接した方々であり、その実感に基いたスケッチである。
