数珠3500年以上前にできたバラモン教の聖典に「連珠」という記述があり、それが「念珠」すなわち数珠の原型と言われます。
その後、仏陀の起こした仏教に取り入れられ、念仏を読む回数を記憶するためのものとなり、魔除け・厄除けのお守りとしても使用されています。
沈香
東南アジアに生息する植物である沈香木などが、内部に樹脂を分泌、蓄積したものを乾燥させたのが沈香です。
日本には約1500年前に淡路島に香木が漂着したのが沈香に関する最古の記録であり、沈香の日本伝来といわれます。漂着木片を火の中にくべたところ、よい香りがしたので、その木を朝廷に献上したそうです。
それ以後、宗教的儀式や権力者達が香りを楽しむ為に重宝されてきたと言われます。
