朝鮮王朝時代。明るく元気な王族の少年イ・ユルは、活発で賢い高官の娘ユン・イソに一目ぼれして結婚を申し込む。だが、それから間もなく、ユルの父が重臣キム・チャオンと結託して謀反を起こし、王座を奪う。イソの父は殺され、イソも行方不明に。また、ユルの母も邪魔者として葬られてしまった。16年後―。世子となったユルは、孤独を抱え、いつも不機嫌で笑顔を見せない青年になっていた。政略結婚をさせられた正室を避けていることを家臣にとがめられ、腹立ちにまぎれに国中の独身者に結婚するよう命を出す。やがて、ユルはキム・チャオンの手下の暗殺者に狙われる。ひとりの村人に助けられ、目覚めたときには記憶を失っていた。一方、イソは「ホンシム」と名を変え、庶民の娘として暮らしていたが、ユルが出した命令のせいで結婚するよう迫られ、とっさに婚約者「ウォンドゥク」がいるとウソをつく。役人は信じなかったが、「ウォンドゥク」を名乗る男性が現れた。それはなんと、ホンシムの養父が助けたユルだった！ 2人はかりそめの夫婦となるが、ウォンドゥクは記憶がなくても中味は高貴な世子。庶民の暮らしにはなじめず、まともに働けず、文句ばかり…。そんな郎君(=夫)にホンシムもイライラ。そのころ、朝廷ではキム・チャオンが暗殺したはずのユルの遺体を探していた。
