ルアーは疑似餌とも呼ばれる。疑似のエサ、つまりニセモノである。今回はルアーで魚が釣れる理由は
まず大事なのは、ルアーは泳がせて使う、ということ。
エサの場合は水中で留めておけば魚が寄ってきて食べてくれるが（なにせ本物のエサなのだから）、ルアーの場合はそうはいかない。
放置していても基本的には違和感の塊として魚から捉えられてしまう（ただし例外はあり、浮かべているだけで釣れるルアーもある）。
泳がせたときのルアーの動きはさまざまだ。一般的なのは、お尻をぶりぶりと振る泳ぎ。
小魚などの生き物には似ても似つかないが、それでも魚は騙されることがある。そこにはさまざまな理由がある。
視覚的には小魚には見えなくても、ルアーが左右に揺れるときの水の押し方が、小魚が尾ビレを掻くときの水流と近ければ、
魚は「エサだ」と勘違いしてくれる。全体的にはエサとかけ離れていても、一部が似ていると魚は間違えることがあるのだ。
金属のプレートの光り方が小魚のウロコのキラメキに一瞬だけ化けたり、ルアーが出す音が魚がエサを食べるときの音と重なったりと、さまざまな要素で魚を勘違いへと導いてくれるのだ。
