ムーティの指揮によるロッシーニ作の珍しい演目ということで注目に値しますが、この映像でさらに注目されるのは、『フィツカラルド』『アギーレ／神の怒 り』などの大作がある映画監督ヘルツォークによる演出で、セットや衣裳も含め、彼の美学が結晶化した舞台となっています。封建的な16世紀のスコットラン ドを舞台とした、ウォルター・スコットの同名小説に基づいたオペラであり、ジューン・アンダソンが見事なコロラトゥーラでエレナ（湖上の美人）を披露して います。
