アメリカ・ルイジアナ州。 刑事デイヴ・ロビショー(トミー・リー・ジョーンズ)は、若い女性を狙った連続レイプ殺人犯を追っていた。ある日、事件現場からの帰宅中に南北戦争の映画の撮影で現地を訪れていた俳優のエルロッド・サイクス(ピーター・サースガード)に出会う。 彼は、湿地帯で黒人男性の白骨死体を発見したとデイヴに告白。現場に足を運んだその瞬間、デイヴに学生時代の苦い記憶が蘇る。現実の事件を追いつつも、記憶の中の殺人事件の真相を探ろうと動き出すデイヴだが、その映画に投資している怪しげな男(ジョン・グッドマン)から執拗な妨害に遭い、孤独な戦いを強いられていく―。
