| 内容：米国の西部作家ホリイ・マーティンスは、旧友ハリー・ライムに呼ばれて、四国管理下にある戦後のウィーンにやって来たが、ハリーは自動車事故で死亡しまさにその葬式が行われていた。マーティンスは墓場で英国のMPキャロウェー少佐と連れになり、ハリーが闇屋であったときかされたが、信ずる気になれなかった。ハリーは生前女優のアンナと恋仲であったが、彼女と知り合ったマーティンスは、彼女に対する関心も手伝ってハリーの死の真相を探ろうと決意、ハリーの宿の門衛などに訊ねた結果、彼の死を目撃した男が三人いることをつきとめた。そのうち二人はようやく判ったが、"第三の男だけはどうしても判明しないまま、マーティンスは何者かに脅かされはじめ、門衛も殺されてしまった。一方アンナは偽の旅券を所持する廉でソ連MPに粒致されることになり、それとも知らずに彼女の家から出て来たマーティンスは、街の物蔭に死んだ筈のハリー・ライムをみつけた。 | ||||||
